One hundred children and youth receiving services through Lund Family Center received a back to school boost in the form of new backpacks filled with back to school supplies donated by Citizens Bank through the Gear for Grades program.  Brigitte Ritchie, Citizens Bank Director of Community Investments for Vermont, delivered the backpacks to Lund’s New Horizons Alternative Education Program for pregnant or parenting young women.  Lund’s New Horizons students are one group of participants benefiting from the donation.  Through the Gear for Grades program, Citizens Bank joins with the community, colleagues and customers to send children back to school with the gear they need.

Lund Family Center and Citizens Bank recognize that back to school time is incredibly stressful for low-income families.  Parents want their children to start school with the supplies that other kids have yet they may not be able to meet the increased financial burden.  Brigitte Ritchie said the program was a huge success, collecting more than 9,000 new school items for kids to take to school with them. A total of 475 backpacks, donated by Citizens Bank, and filled with the school supplies, are being distributed to youth-serving programs across the state.   “I want to personally thank all of the people who made a donation to this terrific program to ensure that children have the basic tools they need to learn and succeed in school,” said Ritchie. “We are delighted that so many supplies were contributed and that we could really make a difference in providing these backpacks. I also want to thank Hall Communications for helping us get the word out. Hats off to both organizations for helping make this program such a great success.”

Lund Family Center Executive Director Barbara Rachelson commented on the partnership saying, “We are so thrilled and grateful for this generous outpouring from Citizens Bank, their colleagues and the community.  At Lund, we know that education is key to lifting women and children out of poverty.  Gear for Grades will go a long way toward getting the school year off to a great start for children in our community.  Citizens is a true partner in our work to strengthen children and families.  Not only does the bank directly support our families through projects like Gear for Grades but Citizens also invests in the New Horizons program through its grant making arm, Citizens Bank Foundation and employees actively volunteer at Lund throughout the year and in a variety of positions.”
