Vibrant Banners Embody School Spirit at NHEP

Four colorful banners now hang in the windows of NHEP.

Ben Irish, a teacher at Lund’s New Horizons Education Program (NHEP), recently designed the NHEP Banner Project.  Ben, his co-worker Stephanie, and fifteen students decided to liven up the four large curtains that previously hung in the windows of New Horizons by painting them as part of a school pride initiative.  The group completed the painting project during two class periods, resulting in a bold, eye-catching final product.  Themes were chosen to decorate each banner including “Starry Night” for N, “Polka Dots” for H and E, and “Baby Bottles” for P.  Ben shared that “Painting the banners was therapeutic for the girls, and it provided New Horizons with the benefit of marking our school.  Now it’s easy to distinguish New Horizons from Childcare and Urgent Care.”

The project helped fulfill art credits required by each student’s local high school.  Ben emphasized the necessity for creative planning within the New Horizons curriculum in order for students to complete all credits required for high school graduation.  Art is a required component in each of New Horizon’s four quarters throughout the academic year.  Right now, New Horizons students are engaging in a multimedia art project titled “Lights Camera Action.”
