LFC Recieves $2,000 Worth of Books!

Lund Family Center was recently awarded a grant from the Children’s Literacy Foundation (CLiF), a nonprofit organization that nurtures a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Residents, students, and staff compiled an extensive wish-list of their favorite childhood and new books which CLiF utilized to purchase more than $2,000 in new, hardcover children’s books to add to our growing on-site library for residents and their children.

“Having these new books has energized moms and kids alike about reading—and chewing on the baby-friendly books if you’re a curious 8 month old!” said Sarah Hoffert, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Outreach Specialist, staff member who applied for the grant. “It’s exciting to see residents reading for fun, making book recommendations to peers, and sharing that love of reading with their children.”

CLiF also provided LFC’s Residential Program with a parent seminar lead by a professional storyteller. The seminar stressed the vital importance of reading to children from infancy, and gave tips on making reading with a child fun and easy.  In addition to the library books and seminar, each parent selected two new children’s books to keep for each of their children. Having access to fun reading materials can have a large impact on future learning, reading and writing skills, as well as a child’s desire to stay in school. Access to books is even more important for families that have limited income and/or do not have stable housing.

“Studies show that in middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books to children is 13 to one, but in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is one book for every 300 children.” (dosomething.org)

Thanks to the grant we have increased our book to child ratio!

CLiF’s support of the Lund Center was made possible thanks to a generous donation CLiF received from Tom Wagner and Tom Hartman from Summit Wealth Group.
